Mbui joined politics in 2010 after which he secured Kathiani legislator seat in 2013.

According to residents, Mbui has been Kathiani sub-county saviour being and they him lauded for his tremendous work in all sectors and especially the education sector.

In an interview with residents on May 30, they said that they had complete trust in Mbui and that if his developments in Kathiani is anything to go by, he can make a good governor.

"As a Kathiani resident, I have seen great work done by Mp Robert Mbui, and given opportunity to serve Machakos county residents as a whole, he can do it wholeheartedly," Pius Musau.

Another resident said that Mbui is a leader who has no comparison in the sub-county and even Machakos at large.

She said that it has been long since Kathiani sub-county found a good leader after Mbui's grandfather's reign, late retired general Mulinge.

"I have not had doubt with Mbui's leadership. I have had great ambition that just like late retired general Mulinge used to do when he was the Kathiani Mp for couple of years, Mbui would take over from that and I am so happy it happened.  Mbui is a commendable leader who should lead Machakos county," said Maurine Munyasya.

Mbui on the other hand made it clear last year that he is not done serving Kathiani sub-county residents citing that five years are not enough and therefore he will run for the same seat come 2017 inorder to transform the sub-county.
