The Rural Electrification Authority on Monday commissioned a Sh165 million rural electrification project in Kathiani, Machakos County.

The rural electrification project covering more than 21 kilometres is aimed at easing power installation burden to schools and residents.

Speaking at Gitogoto Primary School and Kanthanje Market in the sub-county, the Rural Electrification Authority Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ng’ang’a Munyu said that the project is almost complete in all primary schools within Machakos County where only 68 out of 455 schools remain without power.

“Out of the 455 primary schools in Machakos County, 387 are already using electricity. In Kathiani the installation has cost Sh165 million and only 42 schools out of 83 are remaining,” Mr. Munyu said.

He added that the rural electrification project is meant to empower people in the villages, counter power challenges and promote lives.

He however urged the community to cooperate and avoid misunderstandings to allow the project to run smoothly.

The CEO asked the residents to take advantage of the Last Mile Project which is electricity project being financed by the Africa Development Fund (ADF) once it starts because it will be cheaper.
