The elders joined political leaders and other citizens in preaching peace as the election date inches closer.Elders from the nine Kayas converged at Giriama’s Kayafungo shrine in Kaloleni Sub-County in an event organized by Kenya National Commission (Knatcom) to send a message of peace.Mzee Charo Mlewa, chairman of Kayafungo shrine, called upon politicians eying different elective posts as well as the electorate to ensure there is peace before, during and after the August elections. Mlewa also highlighted the importance of unity, noting that elections will come and go but life must go on.“We will vote for only a day and then continue with our day to day lives. I don’t see any reason why the day should bring animosity and hatred,” said Mlewa, as quoted by the Nation. On his part, Knatcom board chairman Rashid Amani also called for peace, adding that the commission was committed to ensuring no blood is shed during this electioneering period.“At this moment, we need peace to prevail in this country. As elders, you need to make sure that the message you instil in the people in this region is nothing but peace” he said. The prayers were also attended by Knatcom Secretary-general Evaline Njoka, Kaloleni Deputy County Commissioner Paul Rotich and senior officers from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and National Heritage who reiterated the same sentiments.
