The CS lashed out at Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi of allegedly inciting Coast residents against the government.

This comes after Joho recently claimed the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project will not benefit residents in any way, and will only increase the poverty rate in the region.

Kazungu urged the governors to desist from criticising government projects, adding that more than Sh100 billion has been invested in the region's infrastructure.

He further urged them to refrain from inciting locals during this electioneering period, saying the move might cause hatred among residents.

“Joho said in Mombasa and Kwale recently that the SGR is a plan by the government to impoverish the people. Why did he not raise the issue when he was the assistant minister for Transport in 2012,” said Kazungu, as quoted by The Star.

The CS reiterated the government's commitment to developing the Coast region, saying plans are underway to upgrade the Port of Mombasa.

He rubbished Joho's claims of the government scheming to impoverish Coast residents, citing other government initiated projects such as construction of the Dongo Kundu Bypass and upgrade of Ukunda Airport, Malindi Airport and Malindi Sala Gate road.

He added that the Mining Ministry will soon formulate policies that will see 70 per cent of the funds go to the national government and 30 per cent to the counties, where communities will get 10 per cent.
