KCB Executive Director Jane Mwangi and MWA's Calleja Rafael(photo|the Standard media) Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Foundation has made its wat into a major partnership that will benefit thousands of livestock farmers.
The programme targets five counties in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid and are set to benefit from improved water and sanitation facilities as well as access training and credit facilities.
The targeted counties include; Isiolo, Turkana, Garissa, Wajir and Marsabit.
The programme dubbed ' Mifugo Ni Mali' (Livestock is wealth) is set to stimulate enterprises that will support livestock value chain improvement in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).
Partnering in the programme is Millennium Water Alliance (MWA).“Through this strategic partnership, sustainable commercialised livestock and water sectors in the targeted counties. There is a great untapped potential in the counties. We believe this will contribute to an enhanced economic status for the households and the counties as a whole,” KCB Foundation Executive Director Jane Mwangi said after signing of the agreement with Millennium Water Alliance (MWA).
The significance of the partnership was echoed by Mr Rafael Callejas, MWA Executive Director.
“We are looking at changing livelihoods through innovative business models. The small-scale entrepreneurs will also have more opportunity for training on getting and managing credit,"said Rafael.
The programme entails conducting financial literacy training of 100 SMEs in the livestock and water value chains, support pasture production, prepare water service providers and livestock keepers for commercial loans of up to $1 million in addition to sharing technologies and approaches in sustainable service delivery.Aqua for All, The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, SweetSense, Acacia Water, IBM, Davis & Shirtliff, and Vitol Foundation are among other private sectors in the programme.The programme, Migugo Ni Mali was launched in 2014 and has been in the forefront of driving economic expansion in the arid and semi-arid regions.
