Education CS Fred Matiang'i has released this year's KCPE results.

The results marked several outstanding differences from the earlier years.

The following are the unique facts about the results released Tuesday morning:

The results were released in record time. Never before have the national exams been conducted, marked and results compiled in three weeks.

The top candidate beat last year’s top candidate. This year, the best pupil scored 455 out of 500 marks compared to last year where the best had 437 marks.

The papers were marked by machines. Knec bought a total 20 machines for the task.

There was a marked improvement in performance compared to 2016. Some 9,846 students scored above 400 marks. Only 2,000 candidates scored below 100 which is a big improvement compared to last year’s 6,000.

Public schools reemerged again among the top performers. In the previous years, private school candidates have always swept the top 10 positions countrywide. This year the second-best candidate was from a public school.

All those who scored 400 and above will be placed in national schools. Education CS Fred Matiang’i confirmed this during his release speech.

All subjects showed improvement in performance except Science, Social Studies and Religious Education. Matiang’i has promised to look into the matter.

There were no cases of cheating in the exams. Every candidate will receive KCPE results this year.
