The Ministry of Defence has dismissed claims being rumoured on social media by terrorists, that Al-Shabaab attacked and killed at least 57 Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers in Somalia, Friday morning.

KDF Head of Public Affairs Lieutenant Colonel PM Njuguna, acknowledged that there was an attempt by the terrorists to attack the Kolbiyow KDF base in Lower Juba at around 0500hrs but the soldiers fiercely engaged the militants and drove them away.

"In the dawn attack, Al-Shabaab tried to access the camp, using Suicide Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (SVBIED). KDF repulsed the terrorists, killing scores,'' he said.

In a statement to newsrooms, KDF said there was an intensive Pacification Operation going on, enforced by Air and Land Forces.

"The KDF soldiers remain vigilant ans will continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorist to ensure peace and security of our Country Kenya, as well as support Amisom operations in order to stabilize Somalia,'' concluded the statement.

Al-Shabaab militants claimed to have seized a remote KDF military base at Kulbiyow town, Somalia, killing at least 57 and driving away KDF weapons.
