A former officer of the Kenya Defence Forces sacked because of his religious beliefs has been awarded a Sh15 million compensation by the Employment and Labour Relations Court.

While delivering the ruling, Justice Nduma Nderi ordered Defence CS Raychelle Omamo to pay the money to Polycarp Nyakoro because the court established that his sacking in 2012 was against the law and violated his rights.

“Religious and observance of a day of worship, even for the people in KDF or the National Police Service, cannot be limited,” he said.

He said Nyaroko should also be treated as an ordinary retiree and get monthly pension aside from the lump-sum as stipulated in the KDF Act.

The former officer, who is an SDA christian, was shown the door when he failed to work on Saturday.
