A man claiming to be a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer was on Thursday arrested by the police after assaulting the Kisii Central Deputy OCS Inspector Abdo Kiptoo Abdala.
Local Deputy OCPD Augustine Obonyo who confirmed the arrest said the suspect identified as Mr Albert Nyamao was arrested when residents were protesting in the county over bad roads.
During the protest, transport was paralysed along the Daraja Moja-Nyamataro road by-pass and the Nyambera-Marani road in Kisii Town after locals barricaded the roads.
Mr Nyamao was arrested after he hassled journalists who were taking photos and questioned why they were taking photos of him yet he was a KDF officer.
A commotion then ensued and the police ordered him to leave the scene but he then grabbed OCS Abdala by the collars and assaulted him.
Mr Nyamao who had particulars indicating his force number as 97181 and attached at the Nyali Barracks also attempted to hit other officers who intervened.
The suspect then started taking photos of police cars and officers who were removing concrete electric poles that the residents used to barricade the road before he was arrested.
OCPD Obonyo said the man who is suspected to be inciting the protestors is in police custody and he will be arraigned in court as investigations into the incident continue.
“We have arrested one man in connection with the protest and assaulting an officer. The man who has identified himself as a KDF officer was inciting the protestors who were barricading the road. Investigations have kicked off into the matter,” said Mr Obonyo.
