The Kenya Defence Forces have killed two Al-Shabaab members in Kuday, Somalia. The slain militants had raided the Somali National Army base in the area.
KDF Spokesperson Joseph Owuoth told the press that among those killed is Nure Hassan, an Al-Shabaab commander who joined the militant group seven years ago.
Other militants who were in company of the two escaped with injuries Owuoth said.
“In subsequent engagement, AMISOM/KDF supported the SNA allies using mortars and machine-gun fire to scuttle the terrorist attack,” he said.
Three AK47 riffles, 11 magazines and 290 rounds of ammunition and a satellite phone were recovered from the two Owuoth added.
There were no casualties on the side of KDF and SNA.
“KDF soldiers remain vigilant and will continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorists to ensure peace and security of our country as well as support AMISOM operations to stabilise Somalia,” said Owuoth.
The incident happened two weeks after KDF soldiers raided an Al-Shabaab command and logistics centre in Jubaland where they killed 31 militants and recovered weapons.
The attack took place 40 kilometres away from the Kenya-Somalia border.
In 2016, close to 150 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed by KDF soldiers during a botched attack in Somalia's Afmadhow in Lower Jubba.
It was reported during the attack that over 500 Al-Shabaab militants in eight gun-mounted pick-ups and four lorries had attempted to overrun Somali forces in Afmadhow.
A KDF unit surrounded the attackers and used mortars and machine-guns to overpower them.
