Business at Kebirigo market was on Wednesday disrupted following the demolition of stalls along the roads to pave way for roads expansion and other developments in the growing town.
The removal of the kiosks and other business stalls is mean to enhance smooth operation within the town during this time of development, according to officials. It will see road network in the town open up to ease movement of both people and goods.
According to John Onyancha, one of the affected businessmen, it was a good initiative for the county government but it came when they had not prepared enough for the exodus. He said that it was good to expand and open up access to the market which will later see their business improve.
The businessmen are, however, counting losses following the yesterday night’s incident where officials of the county government of Nyamira pulled down their stores and kiosks. They are crying foul over the manner the exercise was conducted and termed it as hooliganism.
They condemned the act as their goods were either destroyed or stolen during the Monday night raid which was conducted up to midnight and claim it could have been done better in day time and well monitored..
They, however, are calling for the county government to look for an alternative space for their relocation as most of them depend on business for their livelihoods and that the land where the Kebirigo market sits is too small to accommodate the surging numbers of businesspeople in the area.
An official who was aware of the exercise said that there were no bad intention in restructuring the market centre because they were aiming at decongesting the town and streamlining revenue collection to boost the county’s economy.
Graders and rollers have been seen grading and opening up the road network in the market centre as business return to normalcy.
