Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) Quality Assurance and Inspection Director Eric Chesire has accredited the ban of plastic bags to ensuring that consumers only get best quality products from manufacturers.
Speaking during a workshop in Nyeri Town, Chesire said that Kebs has adopted new mechanisms to get eliminate uncertified products off the market.
This comes after Kebs announced that they had approved several materials to be used as alternative packaging after the ban on plastic bags.
“We have approved standards for manufacture of materials that will be used in place of plastics bags and still working to develop standards for more materials, said Chesire.
He also added that his team will continue conducting market surveillance to remove low-quality products sold to unsuspecting consumers by scam retailers and manufactures.
Among the biodegradables materials approved by the agency include canvas, polypropylene and clothes which are available in the market.
Retailers and manufactures are expected to adhere to the new regulation from August 28.
