The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) on Friday destroyed substandard and counterfeit goods worth 12.5 million shillings.

The goods, which included roofing sheets, electrical plugs, electrical sockets and plastic water pipes were seized at shops and markets in different parts of Mombasa County.

Addressing journalists, KEBS regional manager Nyakiamo Martin said expired food stuffs were also impounded and destroyed during the crackdown, in a bid to protect consumers from being exploited by traders.

Nyakiamo said the destroyed goods were confiscated after the county’s surveillance team made impromptu visits to various shops as well as manufacturing outlets in the region.

He said the move was undertaken after they received complaints from customers.

The manager cautioned shop owners and industries against selling items that do not meet the standards put in place, adding that the pipes were undersized while the roofing sheets did not meet the labeling requirements, and also had minimal zinc coating.

“The operation will go on until when we are sure the region is free from counterfeit and substandard goods," he said, as quoted by The Star.
