Police in Kisumu on Wednesday arrested two suspects who incited locals and attacked an official of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBs).
The official was checking on contraband goods.
Briefing the press in Kisumu, Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata said the suspects were arrested after they assaulted a government officer.
Elungata said officers should be allowed to carry out their work without any interference and not to be attacked in the line of duty. He said the government will not hesitate to nab such characters who block its officers from carrying out their duties.
“It is bad to beat a government officer and those responsible will be arrested,” he said.
The officer was beaten by members of the public at the Kisumu bus terminus where he had gone to one of the shops selling contraband goods and was rescued by the police. He is currently admitted at the Kisumu Aga Khan hospital.
Elungata said some police officers are colluding with those selling contraband goods especially illicit alcohol. He said that the war on illicit brew must be won in Kisumu and told all government security agencies to work as a team.
He said that a police container at the bus park is a hide out for the illicit brew and promised to break the cartel.
“I have reliable information that some police officers collude with these criminals, we will catch up with them, we will not relent on this war,” he said.
