The national government has set aside Sh6.5 million in aid of compensating internally displaced persons (IDPS).
Now the IDPs have challenged politicians to keep off from the money.
According to the area IDPs Network Kenya Coordinator, Alfred Akama, some brokers claim to be patrons of the IDPs but in the real sense, they are targeting the money for their political campaigns in 2017.
Akama who was speaking at a Kisii hotel said the officials have vetted 9,155 integrated IDPs and submitted the list to the committee and appealed to the government to pay the victims before the next general election.
In addition, he said that after the 2007/2008 post-election violence, some brokers registered fake IDPs and used them to fleece the government millions of shillings while genuine ones languished in abject poverty.
“The IDPs are living in abject poverty. They are unable to feed, educate or buy clothes for their children some of whom have dropped out of school that is why we are appealing that let politicians keep off from the money,” noted Akama.
He also warned the victims against conmen extorting them money using the Network under the guise of addressing their plight and urged them to report the conmen to security officers for arrest and prosecution.
