Kiambu residents have been cautioned against conmen who are known to be falsely soliciting money from people with the claims of getting them jobs in Arab countries.
These conmen mostly target the unemployed youths as their prey and they have been discovered to have extended their operations to Kiambu.
Speaking to this writer in her office, Kiambu Youth Officer Charity Githinji, affirmed that majority of youths and teenagers who have just completed their secondary education often fall victim of this menace.
Githinji said that seeing young people exposing themselves to enslavement when the government has initiated several projects and programmes for them saddens her.
“I would like to urge youths in Kiambu to be vigilant of such conmen who usually take advantage of their ignorance by luring them into accepting their job offers after being conned large amounts of money,” she said.
She advised them to desist from seeking employment in Saudi Arabia and other countries that enslave them.
She recommended them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the government to better their lives by earning an honest shilling.
The officer said through biashara and Uwezo funds, the ministry in collaboration with the county government is ready and willing to empower young people, urging them to seek loans and offering them any other form of assistance in order to improve their socio-economic lives.
In an incident that happened earlier this year, a middle-aged man was arraigned in the Kiambu Law courts for defrauding the public on pretence that he would offer them jobs in Qatar.
Charles Kinyua allegedly took money from unsuspecting Kiambu residents with the promise of giving them employment in the Arab country.
Charles was accused of conning Hannah Wambui Sh65,000 at Ruaka in Kiambu, as he promised her a well-paying job in the middle-east.
He was also charged for swindling Regina Njeri Sh45,000 by pretending that he would secure her a job in the same country. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
