Pwani University has signed a partnership with Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) to establish a bio-science research centre at the institution. The new centre is expected to conduct research on agriculture and different diseases.Speaking during the launch on Tuesday, Dr Sam Kinyanjui, the head of research at Kemri, lauded the partnership, saying it will provide students with an opportunity to advance their research skills.“We are here today to launch this international standard bio-science research centre which will help our science students get helpful skills and knowledge pertaining research,” said Kinyanjui, as quoted by Baraka FM.The centre, whose construction and furnishing is estimated to cost Sh150 Million, will conduct research on different diseases including malaria.On his part, Pwani University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohamed Rajab said the new development will boost learning at the institution, which is considered one of the fastest growing in the Coast region. He also revealed that the centre will allow up to eight students to conduct the research. Rajab further said that the institution has 300 students in different science faculties, adding that the centre will be beneficial to their learning.“This research centre is of international standards and has the capacity of up to eight scientists to carry out their research at the same time. Currently, we have up to 300 different Science faculty students and this will help them get the required knowledge and skills in accordance with their careers,” said Rajab.
