The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa) has suspended five counties due to debts.
Kemsa suspended the accounts on Monday and Nyeri, Bomet and Migori will not receive any medical suppliers until they settle their debt with the agency.
According to the Star, the counties have been experiencing drug shortages but Kemsa still holds that it will not supply any medicine to the counties until they pay the debts.
The Star report further indicates that some counties even owe the agency more than 40 million since September last year.
Kemsa CEO John Munyua said they fully rely on funds from county sales to replenish its stock. He revealed that when the counties place their orders they should pay the debts on time to sustain the revolving funds.
“All orders from the counties are subjected to credit validation to ensure Kemsa’s cash flow is not affected by non performing accounts. Any county which does not pay the medicine on time has its account suspended,” said the CEO.
Some counties had earlier suffered a shortage of medicine and blamed Kemsa for the shortage.
