Residents of Garissa have been advised to move to high grounds, this even as floods continue to cause havoc across the country.
The latest victims are farmers whose crops have been submerged in water following KenGen’s move to release huge volume of water from their seven fork reservoirs.
Addressing elders at Garissa ndogo during the launch of the cash money transfer exercise for the elders, area county commissioner Joshua Chepchieng said that an alert has already been sent by KenGen advising all those living along river Tana banks to move out.
“We want to take this earliest opportunity to tell people to higher grounds. We would not wish to have more causalities as a result of this,” said Chepchieng.
He said the government has already taken the initiative to have all those living along the river banks move.
Farmers Federation vice chair Dubat Amey blamed KenGen for without warning displacing thousand of farmers downstream saying that the end result was the farmers counting losses.
He said that KenGen had made it a habit of releasing water without informing them adding that the only lasting solution was by building a canal where the waters will be directed.
“Year in, year out farmers incur huge losses due to the actions of KenGen. For how long will we continue to suffer. Who will come to the rescue of the farmers,” said Amey.
He said a multi sartorial approach by both county and national government is required for long time solutions for the farmers.
