Speaking at Makongeni shopping centre on Wednesday during a chief's baraza, Makongeni residents said that the road signs plus extra speed bumps would help reduce the number of accidents in the area.

"The number of people losing their lives on this highway has been on the rise and urgent measures like erecting speed bumps and road signs would help reverse the trend," said Paul Njoroge, a Nyumba Kumi Chairman in Makongeni Phase Five.

Residents said that school-going children are mostly the victims as they continue to be knocked down by speeding vehicles as they try crossing the busy highway.

"The 'T' junction near Posta area has been notorious and very dangerous for pedestrians crossing the road towards Ananas Mall. Many have been knocked by motorists and cyclists. Speed bumps at the area would help much," said Martin Mwaura, another resident.

They have now called on KENHA to fast-track the completion of the footbridge which is under construction at BAT junction.

Makongeni Chief Daniel Waiguru, however, assured that appropriate measures were being taken through relevant government authorities.
