President Uhuru Kenyatta wants the bilateral trade between Kenya and Belgium improved, saying that the balance of trade is currently in favour of Belgium, as it is with many other European nations.

Speaking on Wednesday in Brussels, Belgium where held bilateral talks with King Philippe of Belgium and Prime Minister Charles Michel, Uhuru stressed the need to scale up trade between the two countries.

"The bilateral trade between Kenya and Belgium has increased by more than 17 percent over the last 10 years. The trade is, however, still in favour of Belgium and Kenya needs to do more," Kenyatta said in a PSCU statement. 

The President agreed with Belgium PM that value addition to Kenyan exports going to Belgium was one of the ways of improving the balance of trade which would see manufactured Kenyan goods enter the Belgian market. 

Kenyatta also discussed with Belgian officials on how to increase direct foreign investments from Belgium to Kenya in energy and infrastructure sectors. 

This, it was agreed, would be fast-tracked through agreements to remove double taxation and protection of Belgian investments in Kenya.
