Kenya has banned the importation of South African meat products after a listeria outbreak was traced to ready-to-eat meat.

Listeriosis is a disease taht cab be contracted by consuming meat with listeria bacteria.

"Reference is made to the outbreak of listeriosis in South Africa associated with products from Enterprise food production factory and Rainbow Chicken limited," Director of Public Health, Kepha Ombacho said on Tuesday as quoted by the Standard.

"The products from Enterprise include Bokkie, Renown, Lifestyle and Mielikip while those from Rainbow are Polony, Russin and Viennas."

The Health ministry has also recalled all imported South African meat products telling retailers not to put them for sale.

Other countries that have so far effected the ban include Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana and Zambia.

Some of the symptoms associated with the disease include fever, muscle pain and followed by diarrhea.

Most people infected take time to show symptoms but young and elderly people are the most vulnerable.

People infected also usually develop high fever, flue-like symptoms and eventually diarrhea.

The ban may affect business between the two countries and South Africa remains one of Kenya's biggest trading partner.

South Africa exports to Kenya by the end of 2018 stood at close to S56 billion.
