Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) is set to receive 500,000 million shillings towards the acquisition of two new ferries.
According to the budgetary allocations announced by National Treasury CS Henry Rotich, funds will also be set aside to develop the Port of Mombasa and other mega infrastructural projects like industrial parks in Dongo Kundu.
"I have allocated 5.5 billion shillings for the Mombasa Port development project and a further 500,000 million shillings for the acquisition of two new ferries for the Likoni ferry Channel,” said CS Rotich when he presented the budgetary allocations to the Parliamentary House on Wednesday.
The Kenya Ferry Services has over the years struggled to improve services across the Likoni and Mtongwe channels.
The last time they acquired new vessels was during President Kibaki's tenure when two new vessels were purchased from Germany.
The management has always raised concerns of being underfunded, as they cannot raise their own revenue because they provide free services.
