Kenya has finally attained the dream of a free secondary education.
This is after the government has scrapped the Sh9,374 school fees that was being paid by students in public secondary schools every year.
The new complete free day secondary education will roll out January 2018.
In a statement, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said the government will pay the subsidy.
“In order to ensure a 100 percent transition for all learners and remove the burden from parents, the parent component of Sh9,374 has been taken up by the government and as such, learners in day schools will not pay any school fees,” Dr Kipsang said.
The new development means that each learner in public schools will be getting Sh22,224 from the government starting January 2018.
Parents will however buy school uniform and provide lunch for day scholars.
