The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has launched a rapid response forest protection and investigation unit with the aim of scaling up response against forest threats in the country.

KFS chief conservator Monica Kalenda said the new unit, to be spread across the country, will be tasked with the inspection of forests and ensuring that KFS staff comply with the law in doing their work.

Speaking when she launched the unit in Nakuru, Kalenda said it will work to ensure that stakeholders including timber manufacturers adhere to the laws guiding the sector.

The team will carry out road patrols to ensure that transporters of timber wood and charcoal adhere to the forest management and conservation act of 2016.

The new unit has also been mandated with enhancing working relations with communities around forest, stakeholders and other security agencies.

The unit has been divided into eaight teams which will be based in Nairobi, Nakuru, Malindi, Londiani, Narok, Embu, Mt Elgon and Kaptagat.
