Kenya joined the rest of the world in marking the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 2014.
According to the Kenyan government statistics on the last conducted census, the population of the elderly aged 60 years and above is summed up to 5% of the total population.
The number is expected to rise due to improved health and general awareness.
Elderly abuse can be dangerous as those involved might not report it.
The Kenyan government in support for the elderly has hasten the enactment of policies and legislative laws to protect them from different forms of abuse according to Susan Mochache, the secretary in the ministry of Labour and Social Services.
