The Opposition leader while speaking in the USA where he is on a tour accused Jubilee of looting the country’s economy and institutions. He also accused the government of interfering with the working of the electoral commission and the Supreme Court.“Let me be blunt. Kenya is hurtling towards outright dictatorship. The Jubilee government has ridden roughshod over or looted every institution that they could in order to achieve their goal of long-term control of the state, or at least till their self-declared goal of ruling till at least 2032,” he said on Thursday, November 9.Speaking at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Raila also accused the international community of contributing to the political standoff in the country. He said the repeat election on Thursday, October 26 was conducted despite the IEBC saying it was not ready. However, international partners including the US okayed the process, claimed Raila.“In this crisis, though, the US and other pro-democracy friends chose to avert their gaze from the unfolding electoral lawlessness, and continued against all the evidence to support a deeply tainted electoral process,” he added. The Opposition leader said Jubilee has “targeted and inflicted particularly severe damage” on the IEBC and the Supreme Court to ensure elections were not free and fair.He asked Washington to assist the envoys based in Nairobi in negotiating the political grandstanding adding that they have at times “contributed to the problem”.
