National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has hit out at European Parliament for calling for dialogue between the government and the opposition.

On Wednesday, EU MPs asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga to demonstrate leadership by engaging in talks aimed at uniting the country following last year's highly divisive polls.

Duale dismissed the calls, saying MPs in a foreign country could not purport to lecture a President of an independent country, who was validly elected, on ways of governing his country.

"Kenya is not a colony of the European Union and there is no way we can implement a resolution made by a foreign country. Whatever they said can only be for public consumption but never binding to our country," he told The Standard on Thursday.

The Garissa Township MP's remarks come at a time NASA leaders have reiterated that they will go on with their swearing-in plans by the end of this month if Uhuru does not invite them for dialogue.

"August 8 results are our basis for taking the oath on January 30. This is not a joke. On January 30, we will be sworn into office," Raila maintained, during an exclusive interview with VOA on Wednesday.
