Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu now says that the country is ripe for a female president in 2022.
Ngilu argues the election of several women in last year’s general election is a clear indication that the country is ready for a female Head of State.
Speaking when she inspected development projects in Kitui on Tuesday, Ngilu asked women in politics to mobilize and identify one of their own to contest in the 2022 presidential election.
The governor said it is time Kenyans voted for a female president for transformational leadership and delivery of quality services.
“I think as a country we are ready for a female president and I urge my colleagues to come together and front a candidate in the 2022 presidential election,” Ngilu said.
Ngilu observed that issues facing the country can be easily addressed by a female president.
She said the constitution has provided for equal opportunity in leadership and urged women to take advantage of it.
Ngilu at the same time asked the National Assembly to fast track the two-thirds gender rule.
The Kitui Governor said the Bill if implemented will provide for equal representation on public appointments.
Several women were elected for various seats in last year’s general election.
Ngilu is among three women who were elected as governors in last year’s general election.
Others are Joyce Laboso (Bomet) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga).
Governor Ngilu contested in the 1997 presidential election losing to retired President Daniel Arap Moi.
