Speaking during a media workshop in Eldoret on Friday, Simon Odawa, an official from the Kenya Water Towers Agency said illegal logging has made the country lose to 70 per cent of the country's water supply annually.

"As water agencies, in collaboration with other stakeholders, we have come up with mitigation measures such as surveillance to cub such incidents," said Mr Odawa.

Odawa stressed the need for conserving the water towers in the country.

He spoke at a time the country is striving to restore forests lost to illegal logging.

A case in point is the Mau forest which has been at the centre of a row between the government and residents of Rift Valley region accused of encroaching the natural forest.

The forest boasts as a source of rivers supplying water to residents of the vast region.

Politicians have been accused of grabbing part of the forest.
