Kenya joined the world in celebrating World Mental Health Day, Tuesday, focusing on Mental Health in the workplace.

The Head of Curative and Rehabilitative Services, Dr Izaq Odongo, the Director of Mental Health, Dr Simon Njuguna and World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, Dr Rudi Eggers attended the national event at Gilgil Sub-County Hospital.

Research reveals that 10 per cent of the population has taken time off work due to depression and that one in four adults will experience mental difficulties in their lifetime.

The officials said most mental illnesses were treatable if diagnosed early.

They urged employers to develop programmes and policies addressing mental health at work place, to make employees more productive.

"Addressing mental health issues in advance will save the cost of treatment and ensure productivity," said Dr Odongo.

"The Ministry of Health is implementing the Kenya Health policy with the aim of attaining the highest standards of mental health. Let's do whatever we can to support mental health and well-being in the workplace," he added.
