Speaking on Wednesday after appearing before the special joint committee mandated to determine the integrity of the commissioners, Muigai said that Kenya risks going back to the path it followed in 2007/8.

"There is no sufficient grounds for disbanding the commission and the commissioners. Even if they are found culpable, due process must be followed within the law. This is an independent and constitutional commission," said the IG.

He further said that there is no sufficient time to form another commission since the election is almost approaching.

"We are almost one year to the next general election. If we disband the current commission, the incoming body is going to have difficulties organising and overseeing the next election. We will probably have an election marred with errors and irregularities," added Muigai.

The clerics have however said the commission lacks the required integrity and oughts to go home.
