A Kenya Mpya bus driver was on Thursday charged before a Thika court with causing deaths of two passengers and causing severe injuries to five others through dangerous and reckless driving.
Humphrey Ndung'u has been accused that on December 13, 2015 he caused the death of one Sophia Wanja and Beth Nduta aged 33 and 82 years respectively while driving bus registration number KBU 755S.
The court heard that the bus that the suspect was driving rammed into a 14-seater Thika Road Sacco matatu on the said day near Brookside Dairies, Ruiru where the two died on the spot.
The court further heard that Ndung'u fled the scene of the accident immediately only to be arrested 10 days later.
He, denied the charges and Thika Senior Resident Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo ordered that the suspect be released on a Sh300,000 bond and a surety of similar amount.
Ndung'u was, however, remanded at the Thika Police Station after he was unable to raise the bond.
The case will be heard on 12th March this year.
Elsewhere, the bus company has up to January 24 to comply with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) or face a stern action.
The measures which include fitting all its buses with functional NTSA approved speed governors comes in the wake of the company's buses being involved in a series of fatal accidents especially along Thika Road.
Making the announcement in Thika Town on Thursday, NTSA Deputy Director and Head of Corporate Communications Dominic Kabiru said that they had summoned the bus company officials to ask them to streamline their operations and management systems.
"The public has complained to us about the frequency of accidents involving Kenya Mpya Buses. Following these complaints we have instructed the management to ensure that all their fleet is fitted with functional speed governors among other safety measures," said Kabiru.
Kabiru also stated that they had asked the management to tame the behaviour and attitude of their fleet crew.
"We have told them that they have to hire a disciplined and qualified crew. On top of that we have asked them to set a date where the officials and the crew will be trained by NTSA," said Kabiru.
