Curator at the Kisumu Museum Daniel Mitei said the process is on going to hand over the museums to the counties.

“The process is going on at the national headquarters in Nairobi. It involves signing of many papers,” he said on Friday.

Mr Mitei said under the new Constitution, museums are placed under the county leadership while monuments and sites are retained by the national government.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, the Curator said the National Museums of Kenya will relinquish the management of the museums to the counties.

He said staff at the museums and other assets will be placed under the counties in the reorganisation process.

Mitei said devolving museums will not alter the current operations noting that the counties will continue running them as required by law.

“I want to assure the public that they should not think that when Museums are devolved then counties will do what they want, may be putting up hotels within the Museums. They will stick to the law and run the Museums efficiently,” he said.
