Kenya needs more than 100 billion shillings to restore the lives of flood victims around the country. This is according to, Kenya RedCross (KRCS) Secretary-General, Abbas Gullet. The Red Cross coordinator said that 1 Billion shillings allocated byPresident Uhuru Kenyatta as a remedy for the floods’ aftermath would be used for post floods recovery measures.
More than 300, 000 Kenyans have been rendered homeless and some even lost their lives in the wake of the incessant floods that has ravaged the country for weeks. This national disaster has called for considerable humanitarian intervention to ward off further damage.
Speaking during a tour of Kilifi County, after the launching of an emergency Water treatment plant for flood victims together with GovernorAmason Kingi, KRCS, Secretary General, Abbas Gullet, said the country is in dire need of hundreds of billions to avert floods catastrophe.
“The Sh. 1 billion is a lot of money but could be a drip in the ocean because we may need over Sh. 100 billion to address the infrastructure loss including animals, crops,’’ he said.
According to the KRCS, Secretary-General, recovery process is not as easy as pie and it would take a considerable space of time thus needs concerted efforts.
“The recovery process could take even one year to help the victims with food, health, water and shelter which require concerted efforts to assist them,” said Gullet.
The floods disaster has caused more than 200 deaths in the country and affected 32 out of the 47 counties in Kenya. Speaking inSolai, President Uhuru Kenyatta committed 1 billion shillings as floods response management kitty to help revive families around the country.
