Kiharu Member of Parliament Irungu Kangata has said that the country is not ready to hold the general elections in a year's time.
This is after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who are tasked to carry out the elections agreed to step aside following a push by Cord leaders.
Irungu says that since the general election is a process, it will take time to appoint new commissioners who may not be well versed with the election process in time.
“An election is not an event. It is not something that happens in one day. There are several things that you must prepare before you contact one general election” Irungu said.
Speaking during a local TV interview, Irungu said that the country should follow the Kriegler's report advice which suggests a that commission be in office at least two years before the general elections so as to carry the elections fairly.
According to the new constitution, the country should hold the next general polls in the August 2017 and not December as previously carried out.
The MP also added that the Jubilee administration was not ready to push the elections to past August 2017.
“For avoidance of doubt, it is the government's position that we do not want to extend the term of this parliament or even the presidency term or the election date,” he added.
