National Police Spokesman Charles Owino said they have received intelligence that the Al Shabaab terror group is planning to launch attacks in the country.

Mr Owino said the police and other security organs have beefed up security in the country to protect Kenyans against any attack.

He said that in the past, the terror group has planned attacks in North Eastern and the Coast region.

The police spokesman said that many terror groups like Al Shabaab, ISIS and Al-Qaeda have urged their members to heighten attacks ahead and during Ramadhan.

“Terror groups have issued alerts urging their members to step up attacks during this period. The main terror groups include Al Shabaab, ISIS and Al-Qaeda have issued fatwas calling for increased attacks during the Holy month. Though the capability of Al Shabaab has been greatly downgraded over time, we have credible intelligence suggesting that the militia group is planning to carry out further attacks in the country.”

“The group has in the past planned to carry out attacks during Ramadhan especially along the Coastal region, the North Eastern Region and in major towns across the country,” Mr Owino said in a statement quoted by capitalfm.co.ke.

Mr Owino urged Kenyans especially those living near the Somali border to be vigilant and report anyone suspicious.

“We are therefore urging members of the public to remain on high alert and be extra vigilant especially in populated public places including hotels, churches, bus stages and schools,” he added.
