The ban on plastic bags has come into effect in Kenya starting today August 28.

From Monday, any person found manufacturing, selling or carrying the bags could be arrested where fines of up to $38,000 or four-year sentences could be applied.

The ban is aimed at protecting the environment.

This comes after years of resistance from manufactures and users in the country.

In Africa, Kenya joins other countries like Rwanda, South Africa and Eritrea.
