Over 35 households in Karai area in Kikuyu sub county in Kiambu have been disconnected from national grid after it was discovered that the electricity was illegally connected.
Kenya Power and Lighting Company engineers have said that the company was not involved in the illegal connection, which is suspected to have been conducted by con men.
Residents of Karai were left in shock after they discovered the electricity they have paid for was illegal.
It is alleged con men masquerading as Kenya Power workers arrived in the area recently and convinced residents they can connect them electricity, with the unsuspecting residents not knowing that it was a plot to swindle them.
Speaking to journalists, a resident from the area who is also a victim of the disconnection said they were presented with forms to fill and promised them the electricity would be connected the following day.
“If you pay today, you will get electricity tomorrow, I deposited Sh30,000 then cleared Sh20,000 the following day,” the man said.
The curious man even demanded to know if they were authorized workers of Kenya Power, he sent a message and Kenya Power replied immediately.
The residents thought President Uhuru Kenyatta's promise of reduced electricity connection fee had come true and proceeded to pay the money.
Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa arrived in earnest to calm down the angry residents.
“We have agreed that everybody made a mistake because whoever paid did not pay to Kenya Power,” Ichungwa said.
The MP held dialogue with the engineers and reached an agreement that affected residents to be disconnected until investigations are complete.
Despite the agreement reached, the residents are counting losses and are back to their former lives, life full of darkness, life without electricity.
