Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo has challenged the county government of Nakuru to ensure that they set aside funds for connections of electricity in rural parts of the county.
Speaking when he launched the Boresha Stima Viwandani initiative, Chumo further appealed to the county government to make sure that it supports the plans for generating electricity so that they can sell it to the neighbouring counties. He said that such a move will drive up energy costs due to high cost of generating the electricity.
"So as we expand the electricity grid in our region, the county leaders are required to contribute to the attainment of 75 per cent coverage that the Jubilee Government promised," Chumo said.
He added that the government is committed to contributing more than 500,000 megawatts by the year 2016.
"When that time comes, electricity will be much cheaper since the main source will be geothermal power. The local generations will also be much cheaper and we will have much more power to offer to other counties", said Chumo.
The company also launched a massive power grid upgrade in Nakuru over the weekend. The upgrade is expected to deal with the incessant power outages which has been affecting businesses and productivity in the county.
