In a statement issued on Wednesday KP stated there will be no power interruptions linked to its regular maintenance till next week.“All planned maintenance programmes/shutdowns for this week and next week have been suspended. This is to ensure continuous electricity supply during the election period,” said Kenya Power chief communications officer Kevin Sang in an interview. The government electricity utility often issues regular notices of power interruptions in specific areas to enable it to undertake maintenance works on its stations and powerlines nationwide. It has been noted that besides the assured Kenya Power shutdowns, the country suffers from frequent blackouts due to supply shortfalls, forcing most businesses and wealthy customers to have standby generators.Kenya Power said earlier it would need at least five years to build adequate redundancies at its major load centers in cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, which will end outages.
