Kenya Power has opted to install dry transformers in vandalism prone areas to reduce vandalism cases.
Mount Kenya deputy regional manager Eng Kennedy Chege revealed this during an energy stakeholders meeting organised by the energy regulation commission at Thika Municipal Hall on Wenesday.
The forum was aimed at collecting views from the public concerning the energy regulation policy in the country.
Eng Chege was reacting to a complaint by the power consumers that transformer oil siphoning was rampant and that only professional electricians have the capacity to dismantle the gadget to collect the valuable fluid.
He however clarified that the dry transformers are more costly and also contain copper that thieves also go for.
Eng Chege added that the only sure way of eliminating the vice is educating the public to respect the infrastructure as their property.
He said that parliament will enact a law that is punitive enough to the offenders to curb the rising cases of the vice.
The issue of unanswered emergency calls was aired by the participants who expressed their dissatisfaction with the way complaints are handled.
Eng Chege assured the customers that the issue is being addressed and reported that Kenya Power is establishing a national call centre to deal with all issues related to customers.
