Kenya Power plans to spend some Sh40 billion in network expansion in the next one year for the utility firm to gain more customers.

Kenya Power that is targeting to raise its customer base to 7.5 million over the next three years also plans to commercialise its fiber optic cable so as to generate some of the cash to finance expansion of the power network.

Currently, the total installed capacity currently sits at 2333MW bolstered by the intense geothermal generation whereas peak demand is at 1,656MW.

Demand for electricity for the year to June 30 went up by 4.4%.

Although majority of the customers are small and medium power consumers, larger power consumers totalled 4,075 in number.

The utility firm anticipates to take a hit from the current political environment that does not favour business.
