The Kenya Railways Cooperation (KRC) on Sunday issued a communication following a fuel train accident in Changamwe on Saturday night.
A train laden with 250,000 litres of super petrol came off the rails minutes to midnight on Saturday and overturned in Changamwe.
A heavy police contingent was deployed to keep motorists and pedestrians away from a section of the Makupa Causeway following the accident that also affected operations on Sunday.
KRC in an update on Sunday, said the decanting exercise of the wagons that were posing a safety risk to road users had been completed and road opened following consultations from the Committee on site and a technical assessment by Vivo Energy Safety Staff.
The rest of the decanting/recovery would proceed on Monday morning.
A statement to commuters using the Madaraka Express on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) read:
"Following an accident at Kibarani area today morning, many passengers intending to travel aboard the Madaraka Express Passenger train missed the train despite the train's departure being delayed by 45 minutes.
Passengers who missed the train should collect their refund from Mombasa Terminus or reschedule their travel through the booking office.
Meanwhile, those passengers who will travel on the afternoon train which departs at 3:15 pm are hereby informed that they can access Mombasa Terminus through Gate 5 (Port of Mombasa - KPA) in Shimanzi area.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused to the members of the public by this morning's event."
