Kenya Railways Corporation has been urged to honor the 2015 Standard Gauge Railway project’s relocation plan.
Addressing the press at his office in Athi River town on Wednesday, the Kenya Meat Training Institute’s Principal James Karitu said the state corporation was taking too long to implement the plan as agreed among Kenya Railways Corporation, Kenya Meat Training Institute and the National Lands Commission in April 2015.
Mr Karitu said KRC had not implemented any single project as agreed by the three government institutions despite being awarded over Sh12.9 million by the National Lands Commission to effect the plan.
He said according to the plan, KRC was to utilise the fund in relocating two Kenya Meat Training Institute’s staff houses and two boreholes belonging to the Kenya Meat Commission, Athi River town plant all located within the institutes compound but fall on the upcoming Standard Gauge Railway’s line under construction.
Karitu said the facilities fall on the 2.59 of 18.56 acres of the institute’s land that had been acquired by the National Lands Commission for construction of the Standard Gauge Railway.
“Kenya Railways Corporation is taking too long to relocate the boreholes and staff houses which have been affected by the SGR project, even after being given compensation by the National Lands Commission to move the projects into the institution away from the new railway line,” said Karitu.
Karitu said out of the money awarded to KRC by NLC to relocate the institute’s facilities affected by the SGR project, over Sh4 million was to be utilised in relocating the two boreholes.
He said the two boreholes are the only sources of water to both Kenya Meat Training Institute and Kenya Meat Commission, hence dire need to urgently execute the projects before they are destroyed by the SGR’s contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation at that point.
“KRC should do what they promised to do as far as the projects are concerned, the two institutions cannot function once the water sources are destroyed by China Road and Bridge Corporation to pave way for the Standard Gauge Railway’s construction,” said Karitu.
Karitu said KRC also promised to provide the institution with water harvesting reservoirs and four classrooms as corporate social responsibility but nothing seemed to be coming forth.
