Kenya now has 44 tribes.

This is after the inclusion of Indians with a Kenyan origin as the newest entrant after the Makonde were recognised a few months ago.

President Uhuru Kenyatta gazetted the recognition of the Kenyan Indians in the country, inviting them to participate in the economic, political, cultural and social development of the country.

Issuing the statement on behalf of the president, acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Saturday said the community’s passionate sense of civic duty as well as its key role in setting up health and learning serve to supplement the government's initiatives.

“The Head of State acknowledges that the Kenyan Asian’s contribution to Kenya has its roots at the dawn of our Nation,” Matiang’i said.

"In this regard, we are gathered here this morning to honour the requests by handing over the presidential proclamation that grants the community their wishes,” he said.
