Over 70,000 residents in Wote town Makueni County will benefit from the clean water after Red Cross Society commissioned a water treatment plant in the region.
The plant which will be drawing water from Kaiti River will be able to produce over 50,000 liters per hour, translating to 1.2 million liters of clean water in a day, enough to serve the whole population in Wote town.
Speaking during the launch of the treatment plant, The Red Cross Secretary General Dr. Abbas Gullet said the Humanitarian aid society is in a rush to ensure Kenyans get quality water in right quantity, especially after most water sources were destroyed by rains which have been pounding the nation over the past few weeks.
"We have been given one billion shillings by the national government to combat the effects of the floods and this is just one of the many projects that we are going to do to across the nation," Gullet said.
On his side, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana was keen to note that this particular project was effected due to his close association with the national government, where he said he will continue with such an association is for the benefit of the residents.
"The kind of politics where county governments could not work closely with the national government is a thing of the past and this means we will continue to partner with other agencies for the benefit of our people," Kibwana emphasized.
The County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim who was also present during the launch asked the Red Cross Society and the County Government to ensure that other areas which have borne the brute of the rains are looked into especially the dams which broke their banks causing havoc in their wake.
