A section of Kibera residents, mostly married women, have called on the government to tame prostitution in the country.
Residents said the way the government is handling the issue of prostitution is not good enough.
France passed a law this week which does not require any person to pay for sex. This, however, angered sex workers but the law passed by the senate cannot be changed.
Residents of Kibera on Thursday, however, congratulated the France parliament saying it was the best decision ever made. On the same note, they urged the Kenyan government to use the same measures in taming the issue in Kenya which they say is getting out of hand.
‘‘If you walk around the city centre every night from as early as 8pm, you will find women ready to sell their bodies. This issue is getting out of hand since school children have decided to practice it as well to raise money when schools are closed,’’ said Tamara Mueni.
‘‘The manner in which the government has turned a deaf ear to the prostitution issue is disturbing. I assure you that prostitution is being practiced everywhere. If the government says that sex should not be bought then I believe these prostitutes will have no market, therefore, stop the illegal business,’’ said Daniel Ogembe.
