Kenya has stepped up efforts to address climate change by aligning its planning, budgeting, and implementation of the international legal frameworks. According to Environment and Natural Resources Cabinet secretary, Judi Wakhungu, it is impossible to de-link climate change response action from development.
Speaking during a Climate Change Symposium at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi yesterday, Wakhungu said aligning climate change into all budgeting and planning levels at the National and County governments will be a demonstration of the country’s resolve to address the global threat.
“By ratifying and implementing the United Nations Framework for Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) and climate change-related treaties such as Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, Kenya has demonstrated its commitment to international obligations on climate change,” she added.
At the domestic level, she said Kenya has put in place the requisite enabling environment to ensure successful implementation of the agreements. “The aim of the symposium is to strengthen awareness and share knowledge on climate change response actions at National and County Government levels,” said KSG director general, Ludeki Chweya.
