The Kenyan Judiciary is expected to have a new chief justice after the exit of the current CJ, Willy Mutunga.
This will take place exactly four months after Mutunga's exit in June. This is according to a road map prepared by the Judicial Service Commission.
Mutunga will exit office on June 16, paving the way for the JSC to advertise the position.
JSC member, Tom Ojienda has said that Kenyans will be given 21 days to submit their application in a bid to succeed Willy Mutunga.
“Seven days will be used to shortlist the qualified candidates and then interviews will follow. Interviews can take more than 30 days depending on the number of applicants," said Ojienda.
He further added that a case by the Law Society of Kenya challenging the amendment allowing the president to get one nominee will also provide the direction in which the Mutunga’s succession battle will take place.
The High Court will give a ruling on the matter on May 26.
He further dismissed that there was division in the judiciary regarding the Mutunga succession.
"All Kenyans who think they meet the requirements to run our Judiciary are free to apply. Let’s do away with the notion that the chief justice must be a man. That is not true," said Ojienda.
